Panel 1: A Conversation with NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson and Robert Wood Johnson President & CEO Richard Besser
Moderated by: Dr. Chris Pernell, NAACP Director, Center for Health Equity
Panel 2: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Where Do We Go From Here?
After the murder of George Floyd set off a wave of racial unrest across the country in 2020, corporate America responded swiftly with renewed and public promises to scale diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Just four years later, commitments have waned and DEIB is under intense scrutiny in a public debate on its merits. From challenges to grant programs designed for Black businesses to the restructuring of college admissions, the landscape has changed. How do we write the next chapter of DEIB? Join us as we unpack the question.

The 2024 election faces a ‘perfect storm of disinformation’ due to advanced technologies, targeted influence campaigns, and reduced efforts by social media platforms to control misinformation. In this engaging and interactive workshop, faith and community leaders will gain essential skills to identify, address, and counter voting misinformation and disinformation in their communities.
Workshop Objectives: 1. Learn to distinguish between misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. 2. Recognize the threat of artificial intelligence. 3. Explore common tactics used to spread false information. 4. Understand the unique vulnerabilities of faith communities to targeted disinformation. 5. Discover effective strategies for sharing accurate voting information. 6. Practice fact-checking techniques and using trusted resources.
The session will end with a practical exercise. Participants will work in small groups to review an example of misinformation, come up with ways to respond, and create sample messages to share accurate information with their communities. By the end of this workshop, faith and community leaders will be equipped with practical tools and confidence to serve as trusted sources of accurate information, fostering informed civic engagement within their congregations and communities.

The needs and issues that matter most to Black men are often debated by everyone— except Black men. Aside from Black women, Black men are the most reliable progressive voters. Yet, when one reads the news, an array of warnings announce Black men are supposedly leaving the fold in droves. What is really going on? We will dig deep into the assumptions around Black men and where Black men believe investments are key.

Grassroots Organizing 101 for Youth Units
Since our establishment youth units have always mobilized for key issues to advocate for change. Grassroots organizing is a framework in which people from a local community with a common problem work together to solve that issue through solutions developed by the community. In this youth workshop, leaders will understand the importance of grassroots tactics and compliance for unit sustainability. Students will learn skills that will help them harness and create power through organizing strategies that can create change within their local communities. We must meet people where they are to mobilize them to action.

All eyes are on the presidential election this year. While this is important, we must also focus on the issues affecting us at the state and local levels, where turnout is crucial. From book bans to gun violence, access to clean air and water, and women’s rights to choose, these problems all have a common denominator: local or state elections. We must not lose sight of the impact of state and local elections and must commit to turning out to change the material conditions of our local communities. Join this workshop to understand the power of coalition building and develop a plan to recruit volunteers, register, and turn out voters starting now!

The NAACP, other voting rights groups, and individual voters have historically brought federal lawsuits challenging redistricting plans alleging violations of the U.S. Constitution and Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. This panel will discuss the intersection of claims alleging unconstitutional racial gerrymandering in violation of the 14th Amendment, unconstitutional intentional discrimination in violation of the 14th Amendment, and unlawful vote dilution in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. To ensure that redistricting plans do not unlawfully dilute the votes of Black voters and other voters of color in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, redistricting bodies may consider race when drawing district lines. However, the 14th Amendment requires that race cannot predominate the redistricting process. This panel will address the intersection of these claims and, in particular, how the legal standard for claims brought under the 14th Amendment has recently changed in light of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in South Carolina NAACP v. Alexander. Fill out the survey.

The number one killer of Black youth in America is gun violence. This epidemic has taken many from us, including victims of police shootings, domestic terrorism, and community violence—all of which are connected to gun control and gun responsibility. Despite comprising only 13% of the population, Black people account for 60% of all gun-related homicides. This disparity is a result of economically deprived communities and harmful policies that disproportionately affect Black communities. Gun violence is a racial justice issue. Now is the time to strategize and develop honest solutions to decrease community violence and increase longevity in life, creating economically sound communities where all people can thrive. Join this panel of gun violence solution experts to end the gun epidemic as we know it.
