Kennedy and her writings have been featured in NPR, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, Glamour, Cosmo, Ebony, TIME, and many others. The audio edition of her novel Reel received the prestigious Audie® Award, and her Skyland series is currently in development for television at Peacock. Author - Tamika D. Mallory - I Lived to Tell a Story

In I Lived to Tell the Story, Tamika D. Mallory takes us beyond the headlines and podiums, offering an unfiltered look at the moments that shaped her—not just as an activist but as a woman navigating love, loss, and self-discovery.

From her early days as the daughter of civil rights organizers in Harlem to her battles with the personal pain that many never imagined—the trauma of sexual assault, the pressures of motherhood, the fallout of public scrutiny, and the fight to reclaim her peace—this is Tamika as the world has never seen her before.

A follow-up to her “masterful” (Marc Lamont Hill) debut, State of Emergency, which confronted the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, this memoir ventures deeper into her journey. Tamika shares untold stories of resilience, courage, and internal struggles while waging war against injustice in America.

At its core, I Lived to Tell the Story is not just about activism; it’s about what happens after the smoke clears. It’s about healing, survival, and the power of truth to bring us closer to ourselves and one another.

The panel will discuss the recent onslaught of federal and state policies designed to end opportunities and equity for Black and other people of color, women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, children with special needs, and Americans with disabilities. Topics will include efforts to limit voter registration; using the myth of meritocracy to engage in discrimination; the transformation of the DOJ and EEOC; and attempts to hijack and reshape education to distort history and spread false propaganda to future generations.

The Future of Environmental Justice Funding

Can non-profits and coalitions survive?

The President's FY2026 budget request proposes significant cuts to environmental, clean energy, and climate spending, particularly at the EPA, NOAA, Dept of Energy, and USGS. The overall EPA budget could see a 54 percent reduction, with substantial cuts in various areas. Several proposed budget cuts could significantly reduce funding and technical support for environmental justice programs in the United States, particularly within the non-profit sector and coalition sectors. Additionally, with attacks on programs and funding that sit at the intersection of traditional environmental and climate work and justice related funding, we must all understand the implications of these decisions. Learn from two environmental experts why this should matter!

Black Business and Economic Power

Black-owned businesses have long been pillars of resilience and self-determination in our communities, creating jobs, building wealth, and preserving culture. As corporate DEI commitments waver, supporting Black businesses becomes even more urgent—both as an act of solidarity and as a strategic investment in our collective future. Every dollar spent with a Black business strengthens local economies, keeps resources circulating within our neighborhoods, and sends a clear message that our economic power will not be ignored. Now more than ever, buying Black is more than a trend; it’s a vital strategy for sustaining our communities and driving real change.

Author - Eboni Williams - Bet on Black

Bet on Black is a call to action for Black people all over the world to adopt a fresh, highly informed mindset that will change their lives. Blackness is a rich, expansive place that centers resilience, excellence, beauty, panache, and brilliance. But these notions of Blackness have long been distorted by American racism, where for generations Black folks have been expected to live a subordinate, second-class existence in the country they call home. Williams delves into some of the cornerstones of leading a first-class Black life, including:
- Don’t Let Anyone Make You Their Black Sidekick
- Carry Your Blackness Proudly Everywhere You Go
-  Disrupt Oppressive Power Structures
- No Need to Codeswitch
- Black Community is Invincible When We Get Together

In this book, journalist and attorney Eboni K. Williams delves into some of the cornerstones of leading a first-class Black life, ranging from understanding one’s history to investing in the sometimes challenging processes of success. She does this all while sharing intimate details of her own story. Bet on Black will reawaken your own self-worth and understanding of the value of celebrating Blackness—whether yours or others’. Williams boldly proclaims that Blackness is the single most misunderstood construct in America. Bet on Black invites you to join her on the quest to show the world what Blackness really is.

Crisis Point: Defending Democracy and Civil Rights in a Volatile Political Climate

The U.S. is at a tipping point. Voting rights are under siege. State legislatures are rolling back civil liberties. Disinformation and extremist ideologies are eroding public trust in institutions. In this urgent moment, in a time of political upheaval, rising authoritarian threats, and coordinated attacks on civil rights, America’s democratic foundations are under siege. This session brings together a fearless group of congressional leaders and change agents who are confronting this crisis head-on—from the halls of Congress to the heart of grassroots movements.

These “Guardians of Democracy” are more than policymakers; they are truth-tellers, defenders of justice, and frontline warriors against systemic oppression. Together, they will speak to the urgency of this political moment, the threats facing vulnerable communities, and the collective power we must harness to protect democracy and advance civil rights.

It's not business as usual—we MUST fight to preserve fundamental freedoms in real time.

Rewriting the Future: AI for Progress, Justice, and Jobs (20 Minutes)

Artificial Intelligence is shaping the next era of innovation — but will it replicate the injustices of the past, or help build a more equitable future? During this discussion, visionary leaders at the intersection of tech, equity, and entrepreneurship explore how AI can be a tool not of exclusion, but of transformation.  This dynamic conversation features:

- Colin Kaepernick, former NFL quarterback turned activist and entrepreneur, now Founder & CEO of Lumi, where he's working to amplify marginalized voices and build technology that serves justice, not just profit.

- Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, Co-founder and CEO of Promise, a company using AI and data to replace punitive systems with community-centered alternatives — proving technology can be a force for liberation.

Together, these bold thinkers will unpack:

- How AI can disrupt cycles of incarceration, economic exclusion, and systemic bias

- What ethical, justice-driven innovation looks like in real-world practice

- How to create and fund technology that centers Black and Brown communities from the start

- The emerging AI-driven jobs of tomorrow — and how we ensure access for all

Unleashing Entrepreneurship for Good

Across the country, tech startups are building powerful solutions to some of our most urgent community challenges—affordable child care, housing access, health care costs, and more. These businesses help public officials serve more of their constituents at lower cost and create good jobs. But these companies often hit a wall when they face outdated, inequitable, and overly complex local and state policies. Instead of scaling progress, they’re blocked by bureaucracy.

This session is part of a national, nonpartisan effort led by the Kapor Center to understand what helps—or hinders—gap-closing companies: mission-driven businesses whose core models reduce disparities in access, opportunity, or outcomes for low-income communities and communities of color.

Through interviews, research, and a groundbreaking survey with founders, investors, and policymakers, we’re mapping what’s working—and what needs to change—to create a clear path for public benefit tech to thrive. Survey highlights will be shared describing how many states have gap-closing companies already working with them to serve their constituents, how many people are served, common roadblocks and ideas for streamlining the growth of these businesses.

This session will spotlight the voices of entrepreneurs and public leaders who are getting it right, while offering local NAACP leaders and organizers tools to advocate for change in their own cities and states.

NAACP Thrive: A National Campaign to Ensure Our Young People Thrive

The well-being of a nation’s children is the best indicator of the health of the nation. Our youth are our country’s present and future. They bring the innovation, inclusive values, and intellectual capacity to strengthen and transform our economy, civic life, and social infrastructure.

Yet, today, too many young people are disengaged from civic life, experiencing challenges to their mental and physical health, and facing dire economic prospects. They are unprepared to work with and learn from the technology that will determine their futures and face severe gaps in health, life expectancy and economic outcomes based on who they are.

Those young people unserved by the institutions and systems of our democracy will grow to be the young adults who do not believe in them. We must act NOW to address the well-being of our young people.

This panelist in this plenary session will explore the key education, technology, health and economic mobility impact levers of the national THRIVE Campaign effort focused on increasing youth:

- Democratic Engagement

- Tech and AI literacy (“Eyes on AI”)

- Education graduation and Post-secondary certification rates,

- Economic Mobility

- Mental health access and life expectancy.

NAACP, it is no longer good enough for us to merely fight for the survival of young people. For the survival of our democracy and our NAACP, we must ensure that our generations to come THRIVE!

Our Culture, Our Stories: Writing Our Own Narrative

In a time of political division, disinformation, and cultural erasure, owning and telling our stories is urgent and essential. As civil rights are threatened and our histories distorted, Black-led organizations—including the NAACP—are rising as producers of culture, not just protectors of justice. Through documentaries, digital media, and scripted narratives, we are reclaiming the pen and reshaping how the world sees us.

This session explores the power of storytelling as a force for resistance, community-building, and cultural liberation. Panelists will share how bold, truth-telling content can shift narratives, fuel social movements, and inspire lasting change. Rooted in the fierce urgency of now, this is a call to action: tell our stories. Tell them boldly. Tell them now.

Advocacy Then, Advocacy Now

There’s more than one way to move the civil rights movement forward. This fight takes all of our perspectives, strategies, and talents. There are lessons to learn from past movements and current innovations in advocacy. This intergenerational and honest conversation highlights what we’ve done and encourages us to think about what advocacy can and should look like now as we’re faced with a difficult political and social landscape.
